VIDEO: Raila Odinga Faces Treason Charges over ‘People’s President Oath’
The Kenyan government says it will charge president Uhuru Kenyatta’s rival Raila Odinga with treason if he swears in as president next week.
He added that he will not be like Uganda’s Dr Kizza Besigye but will instead exercise real power.
Raila Odinga, the National Super Alliance (Nasa) leader, made the announcement on the day Kenyatta was inaugurated as president.
Regional leaders graced Kenyatta’s inauguration. The leaders listened to Kenyatta’s inauguration speech and also gave messages of friendship.
Odinga spoke at Jacaranda grounds in Embakasi, Nairobi, minutes before police dispersed his prayer rally.
“I am not a coward, I will be sworn as president on Jamhuri Day [December 12], I am the legitimate president,” Odinga told his supporters.
But attorney general Githu Muigai has warned that government will slap treason charges against Odinga if he takes a parallel oath.
