Uhuru Invites Odinga to His Inauguration

Kenya’s president-elect Uhuru Kenyatta has  invited rival Raila Odinga to his swearing in ceremony.

Kenyatta’s inauguration will happen on Tuesday, November 28, at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Kenyatta has also invited Odinga’s running mate Kalonzo Musyoka.

“The seven other presidential candidates and their running mates in the last presidential election have been invited for the ceremony,” said Joseph Kinyua.

Kinyua heads the 22-member Assumption of Office of the President Committee.

That means that Kenyatta will be expecting ‘the men he has beaten at the poll twice’ in one year:

  • Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka
  • Joseph Nyagah and his running mate Moses Marango
  • Abduba Dida and his running mate Titus Ngetuny
  • Ekuru Aukot and his running mate Emmanuel Nzai
  • Japheth Kaluyu and his running mate Muthiora Kariara
  • Cyrus Jirongo and his running mate Joseph Momanyi
  • Michael Wainaina and his running mate Miriam Mutua

But Odinga is expected to hold parallel swearing-in.

Odinga did not participate in the October 26 repeat poll.

Kenyatta won with a landslide.

Court upheld his reelection.

Had the election been nullified again, Kenya would be in  another election.

But now, Kenyatta has to take oath. And Odinga is planning his too.

Odinga’s ‘inauguration’ will happen on Tuesday at the Uhuru Park.

But Kinyua has told reporters on Friday that Odinga’s parallel event was uncalled for.

“As a people who would want us to move together as one, we will plead that it is not necessary to have any other public function that day.

“We can bring out the issues we want discussed later.  We should all work towards a cohesive, united Kenyan society.”

He added that there would be nothing historic about Odinga’s parallel inauguration.

“The swearing-in of the President on Tuesday is a historic day. Any other function will be like me choosing to have tea, and which is my right, but there will be nothing historic about it.”

Kinyua has also revealed that the inauguration will consume KShs 300m.

The cost is just over UgShs 10bn.

He added that some 20 heads of state will attend the event.
