Think Before You Tweet, Obama Tells World Leaders
Former US president Barack Obama has advised world leaders to think before posting on social media.
Obama also warned against using “snap judgements to complex issues” and warned leaders to think before tweeting.
“I think it’s important to be mindful of both the power of these tools but also its limits,” Obama spoke at a New Delhi symposium on Friday.
The Hindustan Times newspaper organised the symposium.
“What I would say is Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, all these various platforms are extraordinarily powerful tools, and those tools can be used for good and they tools can be used for ill.”
The question of Obama’s successor, Donald Trump, and his tweets came up severally.
Obama commands a following of 100 million people on Twitter.
“I think it’s important to be mindful of both the power of these tools but also its limits,” he emphasized.
Obama also spoke about recent comments by wife, Michelle, in which she called for spellchecking before tweeting. The comments were interpreted as an attack on Trump.
“I think she was just giving a general advice, the same advice that you used to hear from your mother generally … don’t say the first thing that pops in your head,” said Obama.
father knew better. Listen to them. Don’t do things like that. Think before you speak, think before you tweet.”
