Some of the workers’ associations under Notu include:  Uganda Nurses and Midwives Union, the Uganda National Teachers Union (Unatu), Uganda Medical Workers Union, and Uganda Local Government Workers Union.

Others are: National Union of Government Workers Union, National Union of Educational Institution (Nuei), and the Uganda Government and Allied Workers Union (Ugawu).

According to Notu  chairman Usher Wilson Owere, Muhakanizi is “actually a liability; he should resign with immediate effect”.

Owere also wants the president to prevail over the minister of finance Matia Kasaija and Bank of Uganda (BoU) governor Mutebile.

Mutebile is currently embroiled in a cat-and-mouse game with IGG Irene Mulyagonja over the sacking of the central bank executive officer Justine Bagyenda.

NOTU ISSUES ULTIMATUM ON PROPOSED SALARY RISE

List: Top Politicians, Tycoons Whose Huge Loans Sank Crane Bank Exposed

According to Notu general secretary  Christopher Werikhe, “we would like to reject the estimated proposal of salaries declared on 20th March, 2018 announced by the Permanent Secretary and Secretary to Treasury”.

“That is not the agreed position of the workers and government.”

Proposed government salaries take effect next financial year.

Top beneficiaries will include: medics and science teachers.

Last week, Cabinet approved increment of salaries for selected.

For example, a senior medical officer/senior dental surgeon will earn Shs 2.7m up from Shs1.3m.

“How do you pay a science teacher a salary of Shs 2m yet his supervisor, the head teacher, is earning Shs 2,050,000?” wondered Werikhe.

“Who will supervise who?”

Werikhe added that “the so called enhancement is discriminative and leaves out other workers, most especially those working with local governments and only provide for political leaders.”

Notu has therefore given “90 days statutory notice to withdraw labor with effect from June 23, 2018, incase our affiliates view cannot be captured in the budget of 2018/2019″.
