President Joseph Kabila Names Successor, Set to Step Down
Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary Will Face former vice president Jean Pierre Bemba in December Election
DR Congo President Joseph Kabila has announced a successor that will stand as a candidate for his ruling coalition in the December 2018 presidential election.
Former internal affairs minister Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary was picked ahead of former prime minister Augustin Matata Ponyo, Kabila’s chief of staff Nehemie Mwilanya Wilondja and National Assembly president Aubin Minaku.
Shadary’s choice came after Kabila met his party officials on August 7.
The announcement has come as huge relief to the opposition since it would rule out Kabila’s candidature.

The DR Congo constitution bars Kabila from standing for another term.
He has ruled Congo since 2001.
He has extended his term for two more years by delaying the presidential election.
The deadline for submission of presidential nomination forms is August 8.
At least eight candidates have submitted their applications in a bid to succeed Kabila.
They include former vice president Jean Pierre Bemba.
