Museveni Advisor Jailed over Hippo Teeth, Tortoise
Court in Uganda has charged Yekoyada Nuwagaba, president Yoweri Museveni’s senior political advisor, with unlawfully possessing hippopotamus teeth, a live tortoise and tortoise scales.
Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate James Ereemye Mawanda remanded Yekoyada Nuwagaba to Luzira Prison until next Tuesday.
Nuwagaba denied the charges slapped against him.
MUSEVENI ADVISOR YEKOYADA NUWAGABA COURT CASE
Prosecution alleges that Nuwagaba, 61, connived with two businessmen, Bright Katuna and Fred Rwakaseeta, to smuggle hippopotamus teeth, a live tortoise and tortoise scales.
Police is yet to arrest Katuna and Rwakaseeta.
Uganda Wild Life Authority prosecutor Winnie Namayanja alleges that Nuwagaba was, in February, found in unlawful possession of protected species.
Namayanja specified the species as:
- 192 kilogrammes of Hippo teeth
- a tortoise all valued at Shs 8,320,000
Prosecution further alleges that Nuwagaba committed the crimes at Wakiso district’s Kawuku, and at his Kisugu home in the capital Kampala.
NO BAIL FOR NUWAGABA
Magistrate Mawanda denied Nuwagaba bail.
Mawanda ruled that Nuwagaba had failed to provide people who qualified as sureties.
The magistrate disqualified the sureties Nuwagaba provided, his daughter Grace Atuhaire and Patrick Bainomugisha, for having previously failed to compel the accused to honour his police bond since February.
