Jean-Pierre Bemba Returns to DR Congo to Run for President
Joseph Kabila Insists Jean-Pierre Bemba is Ineligible to Run for President
Former Democratic Republic of Congo Vice-President and warlord Jean-Pierre Bemba has returned home to run for president.
Bemba has spent 11 years either in jail or prison.
The International Criminal Court overturned his war crimes conviction in June.
But he faces a conviction relating to witness during his ICC trial.
Bemba is challenging this conviction. Court is yet to set a date for hearing of Bemba’s appeal.
For this reason President Joseph Kabila’s government has labelled Bemba ineligible to stand for office.
But Bemba insists Kabila has no right to block his candidature.
For now, Bemba is in DR Congo, having arrived at Kinshasa Airport on a private jet from Belgium.
Received by hundreds of his supporters on Wednesday, Bemba faces an uphill task of being nominated to run in the December 2018 election.
