On Friday morning, Kayihura handed over the IGP office to his former deputy Martin Okoth-Ochola.
The handover happened at police headquarters in Naguru, Kampala.

Some 11 days ago, Museveni sacked Kayihura and security minister Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde.
Tumukunde’s successor, Gen Elly Tumwine, has already taken oath.
KAYIHURA ON CRUSHING OPPOSITION, APOLOGY TO NATION AND LOYALTY TO NRM, UPDF
Kayihura said he had left police better than he found it.
“In spite of the recent bad image, I am handing over a police force that is in better shape than the one I found,” said Kayihura.
“The force is now built on a solid foundation.”
He added that “in spite of the setbacks, we are moving in the right direction.”
Kayihura bragged that he had dealt with the opposition.
“I took over command at a time of intense activity,” said Kayihura.
“There was political turbulence and opposition thought they could do anything without Police intervention.”
The general also apologised for the wrongs he committed.
“If there is any body I stepped on, please, I am sorry,” said Kayihura.
“I did not intend to, but it was for the good of the country.”
He added: “I did not have a personal problem with any body. I have never had that.”
Meanwhile, Kayihura said he was “ready to help police as a crime preventer”.
Recently, crime preventers boss Blaise Kamugisha said the group belonged to Museveni.
Kamugisha added that Kayihura had no presidential ambition.
Indeed, Kayihura said: “I am a loyal cadre, a loyal soldier of the UPDF and that is what I will remain.”
