IGP Ochola Shuts Down Dreaded Nalufenya Detention Facility, Top Officers Loyal to Kayihura Furious
Known by government critics as a torture chamber, Nalufenya was home to high profile suspects.
Some of those who have suffered torture at Nalufenya include Kamwenge Mayor Godfrey Byamukama, a suspect in the the murder of former police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi.
Kayihura and Ochola, then Kayihura’s deputy, had reportedly disagreed on shutting down Nalufenya.
But Ochola’s view was reportedly suppressed.
OCHOLA, POLICE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (PAC) AGREE ON SHUT DOWN
On Wednesday, Ochola shared a Police Advisory Committee (PAC) meeting.
And the Nalufenya issue was high on the agenda.
Majority of PAC members agreed to shut down Nalufenya.
Suspects can be detained in the other police stations in the country, agreed majority of the members.
But some of the members, loyal to Kayihura, protested the closure, openly.
Nalufenya had better interrogation facilities and accommodation for suspects, argued the protesting officers.
Ochola and his group said Naggalama Police Station would stay to do what Nalufenya was doing.
“It is also a good facility for interrogation,” submitted Ochola.
