Former Warlord Jean-Pierre Bemba Registers as DRC Presidential Candidate
DR Congo Electoral Commission to Rule on Jean-Pierre Bemba's Eligibility to Run for President
Former Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) vice president and ex-rebel leader Jean-Pierre Bemba on Thursday registered as a presidential candidate a day after he returned home for the first time in 11 years.
DR Congo will go to the polls in December after a series of election postponements.
“I can confirm that I indeed had a voting card and I filed all the papers,” Bemba said outside the CENI, electoral commission, headquarters, after submitting his documents in the capital Kinshasa.
“Now it is up to the CENI [the Commission Electorale Nationale Indépendante] to handle all the applications. For me, I have submitted the entire file, it is in order.”
President Joseph Kabile, now in power for 17 years, insist Bemba’s ICC conviction for tampering with witnesses and evidence in during his trial make him ineligible to run for office.
Bemba was cleared of war-crimes charges in June.
