Boris Johnson Quits as Foreign Secretary
Boris Johnson: Theresa May Brexit Plan Akin to 'Polishing a Turd'
Boris Johnson has quit as British foreign secretary over premier Theresa May’s Brexit plans, in a spate of resignations over the past 24 hours.
Johnson’s resignation followed that of fellow pro-Brexiter David Davis, the Brexit secretary on Sunday night, and that of his number two at the Department for Exiting the EU, Steve Baker.
The trio quit after May had struck a compromise that was expected to bring together her divided cabinet in a meeting that happened at Chequers in the better part of Friday.
Johnson would later decide to decline to back May’s deal.
Johnson had termed implementing May’s Brexit plan as “polishing a turd”.
This afternoon, the prime minister accepted the resignation of Boris Johnson as foreign secretary. His replacement will be announced shortly. The prime minister thanks Boris for his work,” a Downing Street spokesman has been quoted as saying.
May reportedly announced Johnson’s resignation before he completed his letter. x
