Besigye was responding to the heavy security deployment, and arrests of opposition leaders in Thursday’s by-election in Jinja East.

The race pitted ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate Igeme Nabeta and opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate Paul Mwiru.

Mwiru beat Nabeta.

But Nabeta says he will challenge Mwiru’s election.

On Tuesday, three-decade president Yoweri Museveni told voters to elect sleeping or sick NRM candidates instead of active opposition candidates.

Besigye and Museveni has faced off in four presidential elections, spanning close to two decades.

According to Besigye, “Uganda desperately needs a break from this — elections resembling an outbreak of war!”
