Besigye is Museveni’s most formidable opponent in close to two decades.

A former junior internal affairs minister, Besigye fell out with Museveni at the start of the millennium.

Besigye was Museveni’s personal doctor in the bush war that propelled Museveni to power in 1986.

Other bush war fighters like sacked security minister Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde have praised Besigye for saving their lives in the bush.

Even when they seem to be in a cat-and-mouse relationship, Besigye insists he holds no personal grudge against Museveni.

Besigye made the remark while speaking during the  burial of former minister Kham Kirk Karekaho Karegyesa in Kagunga village, Nyakagyeme, Rukungiri district at the weekend.

Besigye comes from Rukungiri, an opposition stronghold.

In fact, Besigye believes the people of Rukungiri don’t recognise Museveni as president.

Museveni thinks the people of Rukungiri are just infected with FDC disease.

Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) is Besigye’s political party.

Museveni was in the same subcounty a week ago.

And opposition claimed the people of Rukungiri had shunned his rallies.

But State House rubbished opposition claims.

It is in the same area where Besigye denied having anything personal against Museveni.

“When Museveni went to the bush, fighters from Rujumbura still followed him,” said Besigye. “I was his doctor.”

Besigye added: “Our differences [with Museveni], therefore, cannot be personal but rather, we protest the manner in which he has governed our country.”
