Barbie Kyagulanyi Insists Police, Military Wanted to Assassinate Bobi Wine
Barbie Kyagulanyi: Killed Driver Was Mistaken My Husband
Barbie Kyagulanyi, wife to emerging political figure and musician-turned-MP Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine, has accused security forces of attempting to assassinate her husband.
Security forces on Monday evening shot at Bobi Wine’s car, killing the singer driver Yasin Kawuma Kawooya.
Bobi Wine was in his hotel room by the time his driver was shot.
Tuesday morning, the MP’s social media manager wrote: “we know that the shooting was a deliberate attempt on Bobi Wine’s life.”
“We were marching peacefully back to our hotel from the rally when security forces opened fire, and one bullet went straight to the seat in the Tundra vehicle where Bobi normally sits.”
Barbie, MP Kyagulanyi’s wife, has also made the same claim.
She told the BBC that the slain driver had been mistaken for her husband.
Bobi Wine is has been gaining political clout since becoming an MP last year. Some pundits have predicted he could replace four-time presidential candidate as the main opposition figure.
For close to two decades, Besigye has been Museveni’s fiercest critic. But he has failed to unseat the man for whom he was a physician in the bush war that brought the current National Resistance Movement (NRM) to power.
The shooting happened on the last day of campaigns for a byelection to replace Ibrahim Abiriga, the Arua Municipality MP who was shot dead in Kawanda, Wakiso in June.
Bobi Wine was backing Kassiano Wadri, the former Terego County MP.
During Abiriga’s burial in June, Museveni said Wadri had given him headache in Terego but “I didn’t kill him”.
Wadri has defied his Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party to stand as an independent. The FDC, Besigye’s group, has fronted Bruce Musema.
Bobi recently backed Asuman Basalirwa, a Justice Forum (Jeema) candidate, who won the Bugiri Municipality election, beating candidates fronted by Museveni and Besigye.
