Col Bantariza: NRM Can’t Hand Over Power to Opposition Foxes

The deputy spokesperson of Uganda’s government, Col Shaban Bantariza, has said the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) cannot hand over power to “opposition foxes”.

Col Bantariza, also the deputy executive director of the Uganda Media Centre, says opposition political parties will destroy NRM’s achievements if they get power.

“We can never entrust or hand over power to unexperienced and confused Opposition leaders because they have little knowledge to manage the country affairs,” Bantariza has been quoted as telling NRM leaders from Elgon and Bukedi sub regions at Hill top Hotel in Mbale Town on December 03.

He argued that losing power to the opposition would be a sign of NRM’s weakness.

“Handing over power is sign of exposing our weakness and inability of NRM government.”

He had earlier made a comparison between losing power and losing one’s wife and baby.

“Losing power to Opposition is like losing child and wife in the labour room.  can never attempt.”

Bantariza compared the opposition to foxes.

His boss, three-decade president Yoweri Museveni, has previously referred to the opposition as ‘foxes’.

“We must not allow to lose power to foxes, but hand over to people that will make sure that continuity is guaranteed,” he is reported as saying.

“We must hand over power to people that will protect us and be able to escort us back home.”

Government daily, The New Vision, ran Bantariza’s comments. But he quickly denied part of the comments attributed to him.

“At the workshop with District NRM leaders, I said: “Never misuse power, but also never lose power! Handing over power is not losing power!”  Bantariza tweeted.

He also made a u-turn on NRM being able to hand over to “opposition foxes”.

“Ofcourse I can’t say dat, like dat!  The reporter must be forgiven for trying to craft “something” from what he didn’t grasp well!”
