Usafi Mosque Raid: Kyanjo Accuses Police of Targeting Muslims
Former Makindye West MP Hussein Kyanjo has accused security agencies of targeting Muslims when investigating crime.
Police raided Usafi Mosque in Kisenyi-Kampala last week, ‘rescuing’ and arresting 36 suspects linked to recent murders and kidnappings.
A police statement referred to the suspects as “terrorists”.
HUSSEIN KYANJO ANGRY WITH POLICE FOR ‘TARGETING MUSLIMS’
But Kyanjo, said the raid and other arrests before it “were unfortunate but not surprising to most of us”.
Kyanjo suggested: “Maybe time has come for government to put there separate laws for Muslims in Uganda under which they will be governed.”
He claimed that “Muslims are the major suspects of any major crime in Uganda”.
Kyanjo clarified that Jeema was not defending criminal elements.
“Our argument is that it is a glaring reality that if there was a major crime in Uganda, then the major qualification for being a suspect is being Muslim.”
He also noted that police was detaining Muslim suspects for “months” instead of the mandatory 48 hours before being produced in court.
