Rukungiri By-election: Vote Counting Underway; Kyamadidi, 9 Others Arrested for Inciting Violence, Voter Bribery
Race Tight Between FDC's Muzanira and NRM's Matsiko
Police has arrested former Rwampara County (in Mbarara District) MP Vincent Mujuni Kyamadidi and nine others for reportedly engaging in voter bribery and other electoral malpractice.
Kyamadidi recently crossed from the ruling NRM party to opposition FDC.
A statement by police says the former MP had been arrested “on allegations of inciting violence at Sayuni SD polling station in Nyarushanje sub county”.
This in sharp contrast with a statement being attributed to NRM secretariat publicist Rogers Mulindwa.
“An eye witness in Nyarushanje Sub County says Kyamadidi has reportedly been found dishing out money to voters,” Mulindwa is quoted as saying.
Military and police are heavily deployed in the district.
“The electoral process so far is still peaceful. We have not registered any serious incident,” said police.
Cases of voter bribery are being reported on both opposition and NRM sides.
The Rukungiri District Woman MP race has attracted four candidates: Winfred Matsiko (NRM), Betty Muzanira (FDC), Fabith Kukundakwe (PPP) and Prisca Sezi Mbaguta (independent).
Some 177,086 registered voters in 16 sub counties, 87 parishes and 280 polling stations were expected to cast their ballots.
By publication time, vote counting had started.
