Opposition Politicians Agree on Strategy to Win Bugiri Election Despite Sharp Divisions
Opposition Resolve to Support Both Asuman Basalirwa and Eunice Namatende
A section of opposition figures have come up with a strategy to help one of their two candidates, Asuman Basalirwa and Eunice Namatende win the Bugiri Municipality Parliamentary election.
The broader opposition is divided between Namatende of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and Basalirwa of the Justice Forum (Jeema).
Even musicians that help drum up support for the opposition are divided.
For example, whereas kadongo-kamu singer is supporting Namatende, Kyadondo East MP and musician Bobi Wine is in for Basalirwa.
According to Besigye, who belongs to the Namatende camp, “there were engagements for a single candidate which regrettably did not happen”.
“We hope the engagements will continue during the campaigns.”
Besigye warned that inside attacks within the opposition could be “disastrous”.
Speaking alongside Besigye, Kampala lord mayor Erias Lukwago, Jeema’s Hussein Kyanjo and Kawempe South MP Mubaraka Munyagwa, Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze said: “the struggle we are engaged in is not about parties nor religion and tribe, it is about Uganda”.
“Efforts to get a single opposition candidate for Bugiri failed, we now want to work towards having one of the two emerge winner.”
Overall, Besigye also hopes that “what transpired in Bugiri should not undermine the broader cause”.
