Museveni Orders Investigation into ‘Illegal Airtel Simcards’ Used by Kidnappers, Killers
Museveni Orders Probe into Illegal Simcards as Kidnappings Rise
Museveni issued the directive in a cabinet meeting at State House Entebbe on Monday.
MUSEVENI ORDERS ON ILLEGAL AIRTEL SIMCARDS
According to Frank Tumwebaze, the minister of ICT and National Guidance, “cabinet discussed and noted with great concern reports of illegal simcards still active in the market and being used by criminals to hide identity”.
The Monday meeting came on the heels of six Kampala Kidnappings.
In the meeting, Museveni tasked Tumwebaze to explain the outcome of a directive that had been issued to the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) to investigate “how some alleged Airtel numbers were got with wrong or forged identities by suspected criminals”.
Museveni would later direct Tumwebaze to “investigate Telecommunication Companies that registered Simcards with wrong Information”.
Those found uncompliant, cabinet agreed would face “strong punitive measures”.
