Museveni, Magufuli Agree on Exporting Ugandan Sugar to Tanzania
Museveni, Magufuli Discuss Export of Uganda Sugar
Uganda’s president Yoweri Museveni and Tanzania’s John Pombe Magufuli have discussed sugar trade between the two east African nations.
Magufuli and Museveni held bilateral talks ahead of the 19th Ordinary East African Community (EAC) Heads of State Summit in Kampala later this week.
MUSEVENI, MAGUFULI DISCUSS SUGAR EXPORT
Museveni asked Magufuli to “encourage Tanzania business entrepreneurs to buy sugar from Uganda” since there is “surplus production of sugar in the country”.
Magufuli granted Museveni’s request.
“Sugar production in Tanzania is low. We always have a deficit in the months of January, February and March. Buying sugar from Uganda defines the business of EAC,” said Magufuli.
UGANDA, TANZANIA SUGAR PRODUCTION FIGURES
In 2016, Uganda produced 430,000 tonnes and consumed 350,000 tones of sugar.
But Tanzania produces 320,000 tonnes and consumes 420,000 tones.
