Muhoozi Kainerugaba Speaks Out On 2021 Presidency Reports

“As he has stated on several occasions, when he is no longer a serving soldier in the UPDF he will make his decision about serving his country in other fields. Until then all groups that purport to represent him or his intentions should be viewed with some skepticism,” said Magezi in a statement issued on Thursday.

First son Muhoozi Kainerugaba has once again refuted claims that he wants to succeed his Uganda’s three-decade president Yoweri Museveni.

Kainerugaba has also distanced himself from a group of youths reportedly campaigning for him.

Uganda goes to the polls in 2021.

MUHOOZI PROJECT?

Museveni, Kainerugaba’s father, will be president for 35 years then.

Some claim Museveni is grooming his son to succeed him.

Ex-spy chief David Sejusa was the first high-profile officer to advance the Muhoozi project.

In 2013, Sejusa claimed there was a plot to liquidate those opposed to Muhoozi taking over from Museveni.

Both father and son have severally dismissed the Muhoozi project claims.

But Muhoozi has risen through the military ranks and is now close to his father, serving as his special operations advisor.

ENTER YOUTHS

A group of youths called ‘MK [Muhoozi Kainerugaba] Generation’ are already popularising the Muhoozi 2021 presidential bid.

The group is led by one Jamil Kazibwe, and has been marketing Muhoozi on social media.

But the first son’s publicist Chris Magezi has said Muhoozi does not know the youths.

“As he has stated on several occasions, when he is no longer a serving soldier in the UPDF he will make his decision about serving his country in other fields. Until then all groups that purport to represent him or his intentions should be viewed with some skepticism,” said Magezi in a statement issued on Thursday.

Magezi went to clarify Kainerugaba’s official communication channels.

“For clarity, General Kainerugaba runs only one (verified) social media account on Twitter which is very popular and widely known, the handle is @mkainerugaba.”

He added that the accounts used by Kazibwe and his group are “fake and the act of opening them borders on fraud, they should therefore be ignored”.

The group, Magezi added, “does not represent the General in any way and he has not commissioned them (or anyone else for that matter) to solicit for money or support for any political campaign in 2021. Anyone who gives them money does so at their own risk”.

MUSEVENI GOING?

But even if Muhoozi was interested in running for president in 2021, he would still face one tough challenger — Museveni.

Museveni’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party is campaigning for the removal of the age limit.

Article 102b of Uganda’s constitution bars anyone from standing for president beyond the age of 75.

Born in 1944, and in power since 1986, Museveni will be over 75 in 2021 — and therefore ineligible for reelection.

But if the age limit is removed, Museveni could rule Uganda for life since term limits were deleted in 2005.
