Abiriga Shot with His Body Guard in Kawanda
Arua Municipality MP Ibrahim Abiriga has been shot dead near his home at Kawanda along Bombo Road.
The shooting happened Friday evening.
Abiriga was reportedly shot around Energo petrol station in Kawanda.
He was heading to his home.
Abiriga was shot alongside his body guard.
It is said that Abiriga was shot by men on bodaboda.
Shooting happened for about five minutes.
Locals ran for their lives as assailants shot at Abiriga.
Parliament has confirmed Abiriga’s death.
“Parliament has learnt and confirms that Hon Ibrahim Abiriga,MP Arua Municipality, has been shot dead at Kawanda,” read a tweet by Uganda’s Parliament.
“The Parliamentary Commission sends it condolences to his family, constituents and the country at large. May his soul rest in peace.
Kadaga Orders Police to Immediately Investigate Ibrahim Abiriga Shooting
“The Speaker Rebecca Kadaga has learnt with shock of the shooting & death of Arua Municipality MP, Hon Ibrahim Abiriga & sends her condolences to the family, the people of Arua & the country at large. She urges the security agencies to start investigations immediately.
Abiriga will be remembered for donning yellow clothes, having his car painted and using almost everything yellow in colour to show his support for the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.
Yellow is NRM’s colour.
He was at the forefront of the controversial age limit removal that show the presidential age cap knocked off the constitution.
Publicly, he showed his support for three-decade president Yoweri Museveni.
It is not clear if he was shot over politics.
President Museveni’s press secretary Don Wanyama tweeted: “Rest in peace Hon Abiriga. Those with this blood on their hands will surely pay some day.”
Last year, Abiriga was pictured urinating in public.
On September 27, 2017, Abiriga committed a public nuisance by easing himself on the finance ministry fence along Kyaggwe Road in Kampala

Police Speaks Out on Ibrahim Abiriga Shooting
Speaking through his deputy Patrick Onyango, police spokesperson Emilian Kayima said: “It’s a very unfortunate evening where l had to confirm the assassination of the Hon. Ibrahim Abiriga, Arua Municipality MP. He was killed near his home in Kawanda, Wakiso District by unknown assailants.”
Abiriga’s Last Public Appearance, Words
Abiriga’s last public appearance was during the state of the nation address at the Kampala Serena Hotel on Wednesday.
He was due to travel to Arua on Saturday.
When asked about the state security, Abiriga said Museveni had been clear on the issue.
“Security he has told you he has put security down there.”
Abiriga said the CAOs and local governments should do their work.
