Makerere Loses MasterCard Scholarships
MasterCard Freezes Makerere Scholarships
The MasterCard Foundation scholarship has been suspended as Makerere University’s questionable integrity continues to make headlines in the face of sexual harassment revelations.
A month ago, Makerere had invited applications for the scholarship program for the 2018/19 academic year.
But that has been cancelled.
MAKERERE MASTERCARD SCHOLARSHIPS WITHDRAWN
“Makerere University informs the general public that the recruitment of students for the 2018/2019 academic year has been suspended until further notice,” wrote deputy vice chancellor Prof William Bazeyo on Wenesday.
“Makerere University regrets any inconveniences this advertisement may have caused.”
Some 252 students — 214 females and 38 — will miss out on these scholarships.
It remains unclear why the scholarships were suspended.
But university administrators deny this claim.
This is not the first time this scholarship program is being suspended.
In 2015, the program was halted after Makerere was accused of violating set guidelines on governance, finance oversight, staffing, programme planning and implementation.
