Leave Our Son Alone: Police Blocks Kisoro Protest against Kayihura Arrest
Protest Organized by District Chairman Bizimana
There is heavy security presence in the south western Uganda town of Kisoro ahead of planned protests over the arrest of former police chief Gen Kale Kayihura.
Kisoro is Kayihura’s home district.
Kayihura was airlifted from his farmhouse in Kashagama, Lyantonde district on Wednesday.
He was taken to Military General Headquarters Mbuya where he was grilled for hours before being taken to Makindye Barracks where he spent a night.
On Thursday, he was returned to Mbuya for day two of grilling by top security chiefs.
But some people in Kisoro are not happy with their son’s arrest and grilling.
Kigezi regional police spokesperson Elly Maate has been quoted as saying that Kisoro District LC5 Chairman Abel Bizimana had mobilized locals through social media for protests against Kayihura’s arrest.
The protesters were reportedly supposed to gather at Kisoro Mayor’s Gardens.
Thursday morning, police cordoned off the Mayor’s Gardens, declaring the planned protest unlawful.
