UPDF Speaks Out on Kayihura Arrest Reports
Confirmed: Helicopter Picks Kayihura for Meeting with CDF Muhoozi
UPDF has confirmed that the force’s helicopter has picked Uganda’s police chief Gen Kale Kayihura from his home in Kashagama, Lyantonde.
A statement issued by defence spokesperson Brig Richard Karemire on June 13 has confirmed that Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen David Muhoozi had summoned Kayihura.
According to Karemire, “Yesterday 12th June, 2018, he [Kayihura] was asked to report to the UPDF Chief of Defence Forces Gen David Muhoozi at General Headquarters — Mbuya”.
The summon was based on the fact that “Kayihura is still a serving officer of the UPDF” and therefore answers to the armed forces command.
But Karemire did not give reasons as to why Muhoozi had summoned Kayihura, who had been staying at his Lyantonde home since President Yoweri Museveni sacked him in March.
UPDF had on Tuesday sent a helicopter to pick Kayihura for the meeting “but on arrival, Gen Kale had travelled to Mbarara and so it had to return to Entebbe Airforce Base”.
Today, added Karemire, the helicopter was sent back to Kashagama and has returned safely to Kampala with him [Kayihura] on board.
Reports of Kayihura’s arrest started circulating on Tuesday.
But the former Inspector General of Police (IGP) denied the reports Wednesday morning.
